The Best Thing about Mahone Bay

Mahone Bay, Nova Scotia, Canada
This little community in the Atlantic Canada province of Nova Scotia is a “must stop at” destination. If you get to stay a few days you are a lucky person.
So what is the best thing about this place?
ASIDE: When pronouncing Mahone, the “e” is silent on this two syllable name.
Could it be that it is relatively close to the capital city of Halifax and therefore easy to get to?
Well, that is a plus…but not the best thing.
Could it be that it is a haven for creative people, so there are lots of galleries (even a renowned pewter gallery) that one can browse through?
Well, that is a plus…but not the best thing.
Could it be the picturesque harbor? Well, that probably would top the list for a sail boat owner or an avid photographer (and I thought would be at the top of my “best’ list)…but, no that is not the best thing about Mahone Bay.
Or is it? That sheltered harbor is beautiful, is it not. Maybe it is the best thing!
Oh dear, decisions, decisions.
A relevant side story: Years ago a friend and I had driven here one evening. As we sat admiring the lights of the town of Mahone Bay shimmering on the moonlit water of the bay, my friend turned and asked “Can you hear the music?” I seriously began to question her sanity as there was no music playing that I could hear! Then she related local folklore that on a moonlit night one sometimes can still hear the music coming from the bottom of the bay…music from a radio playing on a German submarine that had become trapped in the Bay during the second world war.
I must admit that I listened again this time, so many years later, to see if I could “hear the music”. I think perhaps I did.
Fun story (based on wartime facts I am assured) but “the best thing”. Maybe.
Or, could it be that one segment of Amazing Race Canada featured Mahone Bay? It was the task where one member of the team had to create a twin of a scarecrow found in the town. The gazebo that the contestants worked in to build the scarecrow was the same gazebo that I had stood in only a month earlier!
Surely, that has to be MY best thing about Mahone Bay. Right?
Well, one would think so (especially if you are a dedicated follower of The Amazing Race…as I am).
However…no.
The best thing (for me) about Mahone Bay is the lovely bed and breakfast (Mahone Bay Bed and Breakfast) that is directly across the street from the gazebo you saw on The Amazing Race Canada.
The property is beautiful, truly beautiful. The hosts, Scott and Elke, will make you feel like VIPs as they welcome you into their home. And breakfast is a work of art.
Yes, Mahone Bay B&B takes top stop in my “Best of” list.
