but this is not in France.
(Even though it is French!)
Answer: We were at the Fortress of Louisbourg.
The photo shows the Frederic Gate.
It is a National Historic Site on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, Canada.

Yes, Fort Louisbourg was built for defence
but it also was a community…with most of the citizens living within the fortress.
There were homes for all levels of society…click here to see what I mean by that.
There were community services…like this bakery.
They grew their own vegetables, herbs,etc.
