The best thing about Charlottetown?
Well, it definitely is not ease of spelling. For some reason it always takes me a few tries to get the spelling of this city correct!
Set in the southern part of Prince Edward Island (one of Canada’s ten provinces), Charlottetown is that province’s capital city. So that makes it pretty special.
Right?
Well, okay, but there are so many more interesting things about Charlottetown than politics.
Charlottetown is a city, but it has the feel of a small town…everyone’s home town.
For walkers and nature lovers, there is Victoria Park and its beautiful boardwalk along the water. Located in the downtown area, close to popular tourist attractions and hotels, this is the perfect venue for a lovely evening stroll, an early morning walk…or even a place for a someone to stroll while their partner is shopping nearby.
For theatre lovers there is the Confederation Centre of the Arts. This is best known as the theatrical/musical home of Canada’s beloved Anne of Green Gables, but the theatre hosts a full program of events throughout the year.
I must confess that I thought the Centre of the Arts was going to take top spot in my “best of” list, but surprisingly it did not…I found something that touched me more.
For food lovers, you must have some lobster when in Charlottetown. And when you go for your lobster meal head to the Water Prince Corner Shop.
Water Prince Corner Shop does not look like much from the outside, but locals assured us that it consistently had the best lobster meals in the city. They were right…and if this posting was “Best lobster meal in Charlottetown”, this would be my number one spot.
History lovers will enjoy stopping at one end of the Victoria Park boardwalk to visit a battery built in the early 1800s.
Standing behind one of the cannons it is tempting to imagine being a soldier on duty in the 1800’s, ready to protect the harbour if an enemy ship approaches.
Remember how I made a brash statement earlier that there is so much more to Charlottetown than politics. Well, to my surprise the number one spot on my ‘best of” list goes to Province House…and it is deeply connected to politics and Canadian history. (Think Fathers of Confederation)
Continue to my next posting to learn about Province House and why it took number one.
