Charlottetown, PEI…part 2

It should not have surprised me that a place connected to Canadian history and politics would take the number one spot on my “best things about Charlottetown” list.
But it did.
I mean, politics usually is quite far down on my list of priorities. But then again, history is very high on my list of priorities. And Charlottetown is where the Fathers of Confederation first met and, against heavy odds, laid the foundation for the process that led to Canadian federation.
So topping my list of the best thing about Charlottetown is Province House.
Province House is not only where the present day provincial legislature sits, it is also a national historic site.

Do take the guided tour of the building. You will first be treated to a well produced film which gives the “story behind the story” (historical background) of how Canada came to be. Then follow a knowledgeable guide through this historic building.
History comes to life here…things that I thought I knew about the formation of Canada and the Fathers of Confederation were expanded upon, sometimes altered in subtle ways. The whole experience was deeply enriching.
And… adding to the experience, we were surprised to see some of the delegates to the Charlottetown meetings playing croquet on the lawn at Province House!
Do you recognize Sir John A?
Later that day I was thrilled to sit down and have a chat with the first Prime Minister of Canada, Sir John A Macdonald, on a park bench in downtown Charlottetown.
What an unexpected thrill!
