Here we are in the north eastern part of South Africa…in the general vicinity of Kruger National Park.
Today it’s off on a day trip from Hazyview to Sabie.
Ready to join us?
Do you remember which side of the car to get in?
Leaving Hazyview we see lovely flowering trees.
We pass through tourist country (lots of attractions to tempt us)
and into agricultural country…avocado plantations and
look, a banana plantation.
Lots of interesting place names…
Cockaburo Ridge, The Place of the Red Earth, Gold Stream, etc.
Soon we are up in the clouds…rather like in the Smoky Mountains in USA.
Several logging trucks on the road as this is lumber country.
Planted forests are well managed and the trees grow tall and straight. Perfect combination, eh.
Pretty up here, isn’t it.
(Hint: Click on any photo to enlarge it.)
And soon we are in the town of Sabie, nestled in the Drakensberg escarpment mountains.
Getting hungry? I am.
The Wild Fig Tree restaurant looks interesting…let’s check it out.
This is delicious…rather like shepherd’s pie I make at home, but different spices.
The dish is called bobotie (I love it…a comfort food!)
See, that is what I had (click on the photo so you can read it!)
Now…can you identify what my hubby had?
He tried the Cape Malay crocodile.
(Unique, interesting to try, but not as good as bobotie!)
The drive back on the twisty road (paved and well maintained) that follows the contours of the mountain was relaxing and interesting and we noticed things we missed on the trip in.
Again I was charmed by place names…Rock-a-bye B&B, Lion’s Rock Golf Resort, The Ant & Elephant restaurant, Laughing Waters, Silent Creek Farms, Thika Tika, Gecko Lodge, Sabi River Sun Resort, etc.
Word of Advice: If you have a look at the official websites for towns in this area (for example http://www.hazyviewinfo.co.za) you will find a little coupon entitled…
Roadside Anti-Corruption Initiative
Print that page before you go driving. Use that coupon if the situation arises.
(I wish we had been warned!)
Now that I have that off my chest…
