Located on a prominent rise in the Auckland Domain (the city’s oldest park) is this striking building.
It is the Auckland War Memorial Museum…also known simply as Auckland Museum.
From the grounds one can look out over the green of The Domain and off in the distance see the downtown.
The exterior of the building is worthy of a close look.
Look up at the friezes along the top of the building.

The carvings you see up there are of battles New Zealand forces have been involved in.
Here near the entrance at the rear of the building you can see the word Vietnam (one of the conflicts New Zealand played a role in). Seeing this name enticed me to look more closely at the buildings exterior…and I found many battle names in the exterior walls.
One enters into a large dome covered area filled with natural light.
From this atrium one can purchase a ticket to visit different parts of the museum. Military history and war artifacts and stories are only part of the museum. You can attend a Maori cultural performance, learn about nature and New Zealand history, attend concerts and lectures.
Check out the museum’s website for details.
