Cape Town, South Africa. Want a quick overview of the city?
Well. there is no better way than taking a hop-on hop-off bus tour. So, come on. Join us as we tour Cape Town.
There is our bus. Let’s go!
One of the stops is in the V&A Waterfront area near the Clock Tower.
So let’s get on there.
Recognize him? That’s a statue of the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa…
…Louis Botha.
Behind the statue you see the South African flag and the Parliament Buildings.
Hint: Click on the photo and you will see the flags quite clearly.
We could get off here and take a walk in the downtown area, getting up close to the Parliament Building.
Did you know that several cities in South Africa house the government. Here in Cape Town, the legislative capital, are the Houses of Parliament. Pretoria is the administrative capital and Bloemfontein is the judicial capital. Then in Johannesburg there is the constitutional court.
I think that is all correct…but do not quote me.
In the same area we will find the huge public gardens known as The Company’s Gardens.
This area has so much to see…maybe we should continue on our bus tour and come back to this area another day.
Look. There is the South African Museum and Planetarium.
Several churches in this area. I was taken by the colour scheme of this one.
The Mount Nelson Hotel is famous for its high teas. Interested?
District Six Museum is here at this intersection.
As the bus drives through District Six the narrative talks about apartheid and this area.
Next we come to The Castle.
The Castle of Good Hope was once a fort run by the Dutch East India Company.
Now it houses a museum. A 360 degree panorama of the fort can be found at Cape Town’s travel site. www.capetown.travel/attractions/entry/The_Castle_of_Good_Hope
This is one of my favourite photos of Cape Town because it shows several places…
the Castle in the foreground, a clouded in Table Mountain (upper left), Signal Mountain (upper right) and City Hall to the right.
This balcony on City Hall is where Nelson Mandela stood to make his famous speech to the world in 1990 after his release from prison. That day the Grand Parade right across the street was filled with people and reporters.
Today….a market is in progress.
As the bus arrives at the base of the cable station at Table Mountain
it is obvious the fog will not allow us to go up today.
But don’t worry. We get to go up another day. Follow that adventure by clicking here.
Foggy over here, too, but we do get a fairly good view of the Twelve Apostle Mountains.
(We do come back another day so click here to join us in Camps Bay.)
Our return to the downtown area follows the coast.
Now, is that the Indian Ocean or the Atlantic Ocean? Hmm…
Before you know it we are back at the V&A Waterfront.
