Emily Carr was one of the first artists whose work truly “spoke to me” as a child. I think it is because of her that I started to look at art with a keen eye and an open heart.

So it was a no-brainer to visit her former home in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Welcome to the Emily Carr House.

It was off season when we were there so we were not able to go inside the house. However…

the grounds were open and we were able to peek in  the windows. There was a black and white cat sitting at the bottom of the staircase inside. I think it was a real cat, but then again I am not sure.

No monkey though!

If you do not know the significance of that last comment, I encourage you to do some research into the life of Emily Carr. She was quite the character!

The small grounds were lovely… filled with green grass and spring flowers and, most importantly, filled with information boards, each containing a painting and a quote from Emily Carr.

Did you click on the photo above so you could read the “message” from Emily Carr?

When you are downtown near the Empress Hotel keep your eyes open for this statue.

It is a statue of Emily Carr with her notebook, and…oh, my, what is that on her shoulder?

So where is Emily Carr House you ask?

It is at 207 Government Street in Victoria BC.

(It is an easy walk from the Empress Hotel and Government Buildings.)

More recently (May, 2015) her painting “Forest Light” sold at auction for  1.53 million dollars.
