Fortified Walls
Are they all the same thing? Why? Why not?
You know…we are just going to wing it!
Enjoy visiting some “forts” around the world with us.

Tower of Belem
Lisbon, Portugal
This is classified as a fortified tower…I think that qualifies as a fort. Besides, to me it looks like a fort! When we visited there was a group of students on a field trip so there were costumed soldiers and a miniature model of the tower on display.

Fort Louisbourg
Canada

Castillo de San Marcos
Saint Augustine, Florida
This fort is promoted as the oldest masonary fort on mainland USA. It was started by the Spanish in 1672. (That is quite a while ago, eh.)
(Remember you can click on the photo to enlarge it so you can read it.)
Fort De Soto
Tierra Verde, Florida
Moving to the west coast of Florida (just south of Saint Petersburg) we find a fort named after the Spanish explorer De Soto, but having its history begin with the Spanish American War.
The fort was obviously built for military defense…but I doubt if it could have any defense against the wind. Heavens! it was so windy the day we visited.
Just look at those waves!
Fort Edmonton
Canada
This fort was built not for defense. It was built to attract people…not keep them out. A fur trading post for the Hudson Bay Company (North West Company). Join us at Fort Edmonton…click here.
