So, how did you do?
If you are not sure what we are talking about
check part one of the quiz “Name that Cemetery”
Let’s start with question one…
Answers
Flora MacDonald is buried on Isle of Skye, Scotland.
Frederic Chopin is buried in France.
(yes I know he is Polish but…it is France.)
Eva Peron is buried in Argentina.
Edith Piaf is buried in France.
Carlos Gardel is buried in Argentina.
So…did you get all five?
Now for the challenge. Name each cemetery.
Flora MacDonald
Flora MacDonald’s tombstone on the Isle of Skye is the tallest grave marker in
Kilmuir cemetery.
Kilmuir is a short distance from the Skye Museum of Island Life. The cemetery is not all that well marked but if you follow the signs for the museum, you will find it.
Frederic Chopin
Chopin’s tombstone in Paris, France is one of the most visited in
Pere Lachaise Cemetery.
This is what one of the entrances to this large cemetery looks like.
Pere Lachaise cemetery is popular with those who enjoy relaxing walks. Walk the spacious tree lined “streets” and enjoy a peaceful beauty while being humbled by the history before you.
The cemetery opened in 1804…so you can image the variety of styles of tombstones to be seen.
Eva Peron
Eva Peron’s tomb is in a famous Buenos Aires cemetery…
Recoleta Cemetery.
The cemetery is laid out in “street” formation but there are few trees here. However you will not notice the lack of greenery while walking among the vaults and elaborate mausoleums…you will be in awe of the architecture and history surrounding you.
Eva Peron’s (Evita’s) grave is most likely to have fresh flowers…changed each day.
Edith Piaf
The tomb of Edith Piaf is also in the largest cemetery in Paris…
Pere Lachaise Cemetery.
We had to wait quite a while to take this photo as her grave was surrounded by people who were laying fresh flowers and paying their respects. The “little sparrow” is still remembered.
Throughout the cemetery you find a wide variety of styles of tombstones.
(Hint: Click on any photo to enlarge it.)
Love and sorrow are what Piaf’s ballads are about.
Love, sorrow, and a sense of beauty are what one feels (at least we did) in the cemetery.
Carlos Gardel
Carlos Gardel, the voice of tango, was a handsome Argentine singer and actor who made it “big” in Hollywood movies in the 1930’s. If you have listened to tango music from that time period, it probably was sung by Carlos Gardel . So no surprise that he is buried in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
But which cemetery?
Carlos Gardel’s tombstone is in Chacarita cemetery in Buenos Aires.
Fans leave fresh carnations to this day.
So, now another challenge…
If the spirit moves you, research the lives of these four famous people.
