Sky Tower in Auckland

Driving into Auckland New Zealand you are sure to notice the Sky Tower.
It truly stands out on the horizon.
It reminds one of the KL Tower in Kuala Lumpur,
and the CN Tower in Toronto,
and the Calgary Tower in Alberta.
But we are in Auckland, New Zealand so this must be the
Sky Tower.
My pre-trip search for things to see and do in Auckland did yield mentions of the Sky Tower but they were in passing…almost as if it was not worthy of special mention or perhaps because it is taken for granted as it is so much a part of the landscape.
Despite this we visited the Sky Tower….and were very pleased that we did.
Entrance is through Sky City, an ultra modern complex at the base of the tower. Sky City includes a conference centre, a casino, several restaurants, etc.
It seems strange, but to enter the Sky Tower you go down, down, down a long escalator. Once at the bottom you can visit a large souvenir and gift store, buy your tickets and enter the elevator that will take you up, up, up to the observation deck of the tower.
Walking around the observation deck you get a 360 degree view of the city.
At intervals one gets the opportunity to stand on a glass floor to get a different view of the city…beneath your feet.
Yes, I do realize the sign says the glass is strong enough to hold me.
But really, standing on it is rather nerve racking!
And the view down there…well, it is way down there!
See that red square…the little one with the white dot in the middle?
Yes, this one.
That is where the people who do the Sky Jump (a controlled free-fall) land.
Yikes!
Now that we are up here, shall we have brunch in the revolving restaurant?
As we eat we will get a 360 degree view of the city.
See, there is the Auckland Harbour Bridge.
And there is…
OMG, what is going on there?
Oh, right those folk must be doing the Sky Walk.
Interesting, but not for me.
So if you are in Auckland, do make a point of going to the top of the Sky Tower. It really is worth a visit.
