Think you know the answer do you…
or did you give up and just want to know where in the world we took that photo?
Either way the answer is…
We were in England,
the northern part of England,
in the town of Barnard Castle (yes, that is the name of the town…not the museum)
and we are visiting the Bowes Museum.
(did you notice I am learning how to put captions right on the photo!)
The building itself was built in grand French style and really stands out in this lovely countryside setting. It was built as a public art gallery in the mid to late 1800’s by/for John Bowes and his wife , Josephine.
They both were avid collectors and the museum reflects this. There are entire rooms decorated in different styles (ie: Rocco, Neo-classical, etc) and each room holds treasures from that period.
There is a large impressive fashion and textile gallery which features clothing from different periods. The dresses are not just laying there on display…they seem to be worn by invisible people.
When we visited the coronation gown worn by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother was on display (I do not know if that was a special showing or whether it is there permanently).
Do you know her maiden name?
Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon.
(Remember clue 3? Well, there is the royal connection.)
When you enter the museum one is immediately aware of the grandeur of the place.
Art treasures all over…and I mean big name at treasures!
But we are here mainly to see the Silver Swan. Is it two o’clock yet?
That really was not a silly question, you know. At precisely 2:00 every day this swan “performs”.
Click on the photo and you will notice the silver fishes in the “water” in front of the swan. They are part of the 40 second performance, too.
The Silver Swan is a musical automation built in the 1770’s.
(Now that is even older than me!)
Quite impressive, eh?
