Of course, you are correct. It is the Parthenon….but
Yes, there is a but!
…where is it?
No, it is not in Athens.
This Parthenon is in Nashville, Tennessee.
Seriously! This is a replica of the famous Parthenon found in Athens
and it is located in Centennial Park in Nashville.
(Click on the photo to enlarge it.)
Built for Tennessee’s Centennial Exposition in 1897, this Parthenon is exactly the same size as the original in Athens. As Nashville referred to itself as the “Athens of the South”, it was decided to build this “temporary” replica for their exposition. The building became so popular with the people that it was not torn down at the end of the exposition…but it was rebuilt out of concrete in the 1920’s.
The exterior has been painted the way scholars believe the Parthenon would have looked in Ancient Greece.
Inside the Nashville Parthenon is a reproduction of Athena, the Greek goddess of Wisdom.
The statue is huge! To gain a bit of perspective…look at the “little” statue she is holding in her right hand. That is the winged Greek goddess of victory (Nike) and that “little” statue is six feet tall.
There are beautiful copies of some of the Parthenon Marbles on display inside the Nashville Parthenon.
These are direct casts of the originals found on the Parthenon (Athens) walls.
