Everyone has to eat..right? So, when you are in a new country, do you search out familiar foods that you have at home or do you expand your horizons and eat like the locals?
We do a bit of both. And if the opportunity arises we even learn a little about preparing local food. Hence our time at the Bumbu Bali Cooking School.
The school is on the south end of the island near Nusa Dua…very close to many resort areas. When we were there, the school had a hotel pick-up service which made it convenient for those without their own transport.
Our pick up time was very early in the morning. Why? Because our cooking lesson began with a field trip to the local market to get the ingredients.
Each of us has our own shopping assignment…like peppers, enough for the whole day. Hmm…how many peppers would a Balinese restaurant use in a day? Answer: A whole lot of peppers!
After getting all the peppers I had fun just looking at all the produce available and being part of this early morning culture. (The place was crowded. People everywhere!)
We learned how to examine a fish to determine its freshness and health.
And then enjoyed seeing the fishing boats…just a few steps away.

On the return drive to the school, our instructor took the long way back to show us some of the local sites including a mini lesson that many different religions are found in Bali. We were able to see four different places of worship on the drive.
Back at the school we were put to work immediately (after all, that is why we signed up for a cooking class, wasn’t it!)
Everyone got involved…men, women all pitched in!
Ours was a small group but a very international group of German, Japanese, and Canadian.
It was a fun learning experience…spices I had never heard of, combinations of items I had not considered. And the best part was that we got to eat the meal we had prepared together!
A wonderful experience. Thank you Bumbu Bali Cooking School!
