Any idea what you are looking at?
(Hint click on any photo to enlarge it.)
Yes, you are looking at a shadow….but a shadow of what!
You are on a glass floor 928 feet above the glacier formed Sunwapta Valley!
Welcome to the Glacier Skywalk in the Canadian Rocky mountains.
Click on the photo for a great explanation of how it works.
Another display board reassures us that even though some of our kinetic energy is transferred to the walkway when we walk out on the glass platform (causing it to move slightly) there are dampers built into the structure that work like shocks on a car. Uh, uh…if they say so!
Walking 98 feet out into mid air…I sure hope there is something!
(I exaggerate a bit… the first few steps were a bit scary, but after that everything was fine
as long as I did not look straight down!)
Getting there
If driving yourself follow the Columbia Icefields Parkway…travel time is about one hour heading south from Jasper, Alberta or about two and a half hours heading north from Banff. The scenery along the parkway is spectacular from either direction!
There is no place for cars to park right at the skywalk as it is literally built over a cliff. A short distance south of the attraction is the Glacier View Inn where there is a huge parking lot and a visitor centre (Discovery Centre).
Here at the Discovery Centre you will purchase your tickets (at time of writing is was $29.95 CDN per person) and get a time sensitive boarding pass for buses that will take you to the skywalk.
Once off the bus you follow a paved walkway where you can enjoy views of the Sunwapta Valley and explore the interpretive displays.
It was not busy (late afternoon) when we were there. However, when several tourist groups arrive at the same time I suspect it can be rather crowded. So have a seat, listen to the information on the hand-held guides you get getting off the bus (The guides come in multiple languages.)
The glass skywalk is a special experience, but be sure to take time to appreciate all the scenery around you during the interpretive walk.
